The first National Basketball League grand final was played at Albert Park stadium here in Melbourne Australia in 1979.
It was between St Kilda and Canberra and the stadium was packed.
It was an exciting time and the NBL became very popular with increased sponsorship deals, television coverage and a huge following.
The NBL’s populartity peaked around the mid 1990’s and then declined as teams struggled financially and it eventually lost its free to air coverage on tv. It now can be seen on pay tv.
Last year’s premiers, the South Dragons, failed to field a team this year!
I’m a basketball coach and fan from way back and hope the league can one day regain its glory years.
